"Spiderman" may be the name of a superhero, but the story is really about an ordinary kid. He just happens to have extraordinary powers. Referring to himself as ''your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man,'' he seemed aware of the absurdity inherent in being a freelance big-city crime fighter. "Spiderman" seems fresher, with a more human perspective. That's something that we can all appreciate. The film is really a tender story about a frail boy trying to cope with some tough realities, including bullies, responsibility, sacrifice, and love.
In Spidey 3, Peter is starting to fall in love with his reputation. It's not enough that he save people; he must be seen saving them. "They love me!" he cries with a dawning pleasure. Celebrity is this superhero's cocaine. The "something from outer space" Stewart referred to is really just an expression of the inner conflict between the old and new Peter. "Who are you?" Mary Jane demands, and Peter honestly replies, "I don't know." The problem is that Peter is still enough of a nice kid that he can't quite pull off the attendant arrogance; a good kid who's not very good at being bad.
